Geelong Pubs About

About GeelongPubs.com.au

A community directory built by a Geelong local, for Geelong locals — and anyone who wants to explore the best pubs in the region

Why This Site Exists

I grew up in Geelong. Not the Geelong of weekend retreats and coastal getaways that Melbourne visitors know — the one where you know which pub has the best parmi on a Tuesday, where the Carlton draught is coldest, and which bartender will remember your order by the third visit.

At some point, that version of Geelong started getting harder to find. Not because the pubs got worse — if anything, they got better. But somewhere along the way, finding out what was actually on started requiring four different websites, three Instagram accounts, and a phone call that rang out.

I thought: someone should fix this.

The Simple Idea

GeelongPubs.com.au started as a spreadsheet. A list of every pub worth knowing about, with their hours, their specials, their vibe. The kind of thing you would share with a mate who was moving to town, or someone visiting from Melbourne who wanted the real version of Geelong rather than a TripAdvisor result.

The spreadsheet became a website. The website became a proper directory. And the directory became something genuinely worth building on.

The idea is not complicated: if you want to know where to go for a drink in Geelong, this should be the first place you look and the only place you need.

For Geelong Locals

Geelong is one of the few places in Australia where pub culture is still genuinely central to how people socialise. The post-work parmi. The Saturday footy watching session. The Sunday session that stretches into the late afternoon because no one really wants it to end. These are not dying traditions — they are alive and well in pubs right across this city. They just need more people walking through the door.

Getting out and about is good for Geelong. It is good for the pubs, good for the streets around them, and good for the people who live here. There is something about meeting mates at the local — the proper kind of catch-up, away from a screen — that does not happen often enough anymore.

GeelongPubs.com.au is built to make that easier. To take the friction out of finding your local, to surface the deals worth planning around, to give you a reason to try the pub in the suburb you drive past every day but have never been into.

For Visitors

If you are coming from Melbourne for a Cats game, a GPAC show, or just a weekend away: Geelong's pub scene is significantly underrated. The heritage bluestone buildings, the waterfront bars looking out over the bay, the craft breweries down the Surf Coast, the Pakington Street strip in Geelong West — there is more here than most visitors expect, and most of it is a short walk from the train station.

The V/Line takes an hour from Southern Cross. You do not need a car, and you do not need a local to show you around. GeelongPubs.com.au does the local bit.

How the Directory Works

Every pub in this directory is listed because it is worth listing. Not because anyone paid to be here, not because of an algorithm, not because a content agency scraped a database. Each listing has been built from real venue data: opening hours sourced from pub websites, specials verified where possible, details updated when they change.

The site currently covers over 100 pubs, hotels and bars across Geelong and the Surf Coast — from the CBD and waterfront through to the Bellarine Peninsula, Torquay, and the outer suburbs. It is updated regularly and growing.

If a detail is wrong, a pub has changed its hours, or there is a great local that should be listed but isn't — tell us. Every page has the contact email. We will verify it and get it added.
