Lara Hotel — the closest pub to the terminal
Lara Hotel
Five minutes south of Avalon off the Princes Highway in Lara township, this is the first pub you pass on the way to Geelong. Bistro, sports bar, gaming lounge and beer garden, open until 1am Wednesday to Saturday — but only 11pm Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, so a midweek arrival landing after 11pm will find it shut. 10 Hicks St, Lara. 03 5282 1260. Rated 3.8 from 766 reviews.
Gateway Hotel Corio — open 4am every day
Gateway Hotel
Ten minutes south of Avalon on the Princes Highway as you approach Geelong, Gateway opens 10am–4am seven days a week — the most reliable late-arrival option on the corridor. Full bistro, indoor kids playground, TAB, function rooms, attached bottle shop and on-site accommodation units. 218–230 Princes Hwy, Corio. 03 5275 1091. Rated 4.3 from 822 reviews.
The Norlane Hotel — the latest close in the region
The Norlane Hotel
Fifteen minutes from Avalon, unmissable on the Princes Highway entering Geelong from the north (fronted by the Sir Hubert 'Oppy' Opperman tribute). Open 9am–5am every day — the latest-closing venue on the airport corridor and the obvious answer for the daily 10:50pm Sydney return (JQ613). The 9am opening also lands roughly two hours after the overnight Bali return (JQ50, arrives Avalon 7am) clears the carousel — a TAB-and-bistro morning beer for the holiday hangover. All-day bistro, TAB from 9am, entertainment lounge running into the early hours, pokies, sports screens and an attached bottle shop. 2–8 Princes Hwy, Norlane. 03 5278 2423. Rated 4.0 from 442 reviews.
Malt Shovel Taphouse — the last drink before the flight back
Malt Shovel Taphouse
Twenty-five minutes from Avalon at the eastern end of the CBD, directly opposite Geelong Station. Rotating roster of independent Australian and international craft beers, full wine and cocktail list, rotisserie kitchen, art deco front room and a beer garden. Open Sunday to Thursday 11:30am–10:30pm and Friday to Saturday 11:30am–1am — the pick for a long Friday or Saturday lunch before the 8:55pm Sydney departure (leave the CBD by 7:30pm for the 20-minute drive to AVV). 7–21 Bellerine St, Geelong. 03 5222 8756. Rated 4.1 from 415 reviews.
Elephant & Castle Hotel — weekend roasts and Friday steak before you fly
Elephant & Castle Hotel
A Geelong CBD institution since 1891, 25 minutes from Avalon. Premium Steak Night Wednesday and Friday from 5:30pm ($25 rump, $30 300g porterhouse, $36 200g eye fillet), Thursday parmi night $24, Jackpot Trivia Thursday 7pm, Sunday roast 11:45am–2:30pm $30, and free live bands Saturday 9pm and Sunday 3:30pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday — not an option for a midweek arrival or pre-flight dinner those nights. 158 McKillop St, Geelong. 03 5221 3707. Rated 4.4 from 1,572 reviews.
The Grovedale Hotel — the southern-suburb late-night fallback
The Grovedale Hotel
Thirty to thirty-five minutes south of Avalon on Torquay Road, Grovedale runs three spaces under one roof: Pioneer Kitchen for sit-down dining, The Juke open-air garden bar with retractable roof, and the Members End sports bar with Foxtel on every screen. Open Sunday to Friday 10am–4am and Saturday 12pm–3am — useful if you have already pushed past Geelong CBD's midweek 10:30pm–11pm last drinks and need somewhere south. Wednesday steak night 5:30–8:30pm, Tuesday trivia, live music Friday and Saturday. 236–258 Torquay Rd, Grovedale. 1300 476 833. Rated 4.1 from 1,796 reviews.
Plan Your Visit
Gateway (10 min from AVV) or Norlane (15 min) — both still serving well past midnight. Lara Hotel works too on Wed–Sat if you can be in the door before 1am (it shuts at 11pm Sun–Tue).
Lara closes at 11pm Sun–Tue — too tight after baggage and the drive. Your Princes Highway options are Gateway (until 4am) and Norlane (until 5am).
Norlane opens 9am — two hours after baggage, a TAB-and-bistro morning beer for the holiday-hangover crowd. Gateway opens 10am with full bistro and the indoor playground if you have kids in tow. If you have stayed up through the carousel and want somewhere still trading on the way out of the airport, Norlane (5am close), Gateway (4am close) and Grovedale (4am Sun–Fri) are all open through the small hours. For the full region-wide picture of pre-11am openings — including the Edge Geelong 8am waterfront bistro — see the Pubs Open Early in Geelong guide.
The Spirit of Tasmania terminal at 136 Corio Quay Road sits twenty minutes south of Avalon on the same Princes Highway corridor — the two anchor points of the region's ferry-plus-flight combination pattern. For the specific patterns — a 6:00am ferry arrival paired with an afternoon Jetstar departure, or a 10:50pm Sydney landing paired with the 6:45pm overnight sailing to Devonport — see the Ferry + Flight Geelong hub. The Sphinx (5 min from Corio Quay) and Lara Hotel (5 min from AVV) are the two pubs that bookend the corridor.
Malt Shovel in the CBD. Leave by 7:30pm for the 20-minute drive to AVV.
Elephant & Castle — Friday steak from 5:30pm or Sunday roast 11:45am–2:30pm at $30.
